Frequently Asked Questions about the Georgia Pistols and AAU

What is AAU?

AAU stands for Amateur Athletic Union. The AAU is a national organization based in Lake Buena Vista , FL , that is the one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States . The AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness, such as with the girls’ basketball program where the Pistols compete. The national AAU is divided into districts around the country. The Pistols compete in the Georgia District , The national AAU girls’ basketball Web site is at http://www.aaugirlsbasketball.org / . Also, to get a flavor about AAU girls’ basketball, go to the girl’s basketball Message Board at http://aaugirlsbasketball.org/forum/default.asp and you’ll read comments from folks all over the country.

What is YBOA. Is a similiar organization to AAU and sponsors many tournaments and our teams frequently play in these events.

Who are the Georgia Pistols?

The Georgia Pistols organization is one of the oldest and largest of the girls’ AAU clubs in the Georgia District of AAU and has operated for more than 17 years in the Atlanta metropolitan area. In a given year, the Pistols will operate 6 or 7 AAU teams in various age groups to compete in the Georgia District Championships held each April and May. A major goal of the organization is to field highly competitive teams each year that will qualify for national AAU tournaments and play at a high level in other elite national basketball tournaments. The Pistols is characterized as a regional rather than local organization or neighborhood club. The organization typically attracts players from the great metro area and some kids come from over two hours.

The Pistols is a volunteer non-profit organization.

What are the goals of the Pistols organization?

We want our players to develop as good basketball players and good young women. We want the girls to have fun, be competitive, learn sportsmanship and win. For the younger girls, our goal is to teach them the fundamentals of basketball so they can prepare for high school basketball and be successful. For our high school players, our goal is to assist them, their parents and coaches to prepare to play a big role on their high school team and for some to prepare them for college basketball and possibly receive college scholarships.

What are the rules of the club? Proper conduct of parents and players is required at all times. We have both a parent and player code of conduct under downloads. Please read and follow. We urge parents to refain from coaching or officiating from the stands and just be a fan our your daughter and her teammates.

What if my child is not a super star basketball player?

This program is also very dedicated to developing players and is a good fit for girls who want to improve at basketball but also have other activities. The developing teams often practice and play less than our Gold and Purple teams. Also they usually end their season about the time school is getting out. It is a major goal of the organization to have development teams to help develop players for school teams. The overall plan is to get each player to the next level. Teaching basketball fundamentals plays a big part of our program. We are about developing players and a benefit of that has been it helps bring in good players trying to get better.

Q. If my child makes an AAU team, is she guaranteed playing time or could she sit on the bench?

A. No player is guaranteed playing time. The selection process attempts to get the best players, on any given team, so competition for playing time is earned by player performance and effort. Every attempt will be made to get playing time for all players, but it is not guaranteed, for every game. However, except in very important games everyone will play some. Over the course of the season all players get their chance to play if they work hard. AAU Competition dictates great performance on the court and winning is necessary to advance in any tournament. On our developmental teams all players play a good bit in every game.

My child is a Super Star we think she needs to play up an age will you permit it?

Our club has had a long list of high level girls who played major college basketball including high school all Americans, Kodak All-American and AAU All American and they played at their AAU age and all of their found the experience to be the right level for their development. The few times the club has permitted a girl to play up it was for reasons other than being a super star. If a team is so good they need a challenge we will routinely play the team as a whole up an age group.

When is the Pistols season?

The primary season for girls’ AAU basketball is February through July, particularly for the most competitive teams that compete on the national level. Teams in age groups 14-under and above begin to organize at the end of the high school basketball season in February of each year. Some younger Pistols teams in age groups 13-under and below may play outside the AAU season in the fall and winter in order to prepare for the AAU season but most play February to the end of the year except for teams going to the AAU Nationals. Many players on developmental teams take the summer off and end around the beginning of June.

What is the expected commitment of AAU basketball?

To some extent the level of commitment depends on the level of the team . The commitment for a Gold and Purple team is greater than the other teams. The commitment can be a big one, but also one than can bring many rewards for your daughters. AAU is not recreational or “county” ball. The commitment also varies from team to team as some teams play more competitive schedules than others. The commitment principally involves time and money. Time because parents have to be committed to getting their daughters to practices and games, and money because the Pistols is a volunteer organization and parents are responsible for supporting their daughters’ participation financially. Practices could be around the corner or an hour’s drive because much depends on availability of facilities and where you live. Games are usually on the weekend. It is expected that a player will make all the games and practices but for players on developing teams playing other sports we will try to work with her on this issue. Most teams practice twice a week usually once during week and once on the weekend. While conflicts always arise in any endeavor, absences can disrupt the team’s continuity and chemistry and are not fair to teammates and coaches. The key thing is to always communicate what’s going on with your daughter to the coaches so they can plan accordingly. Players who play a school sport can usually play AAU as well.

Q. How far and how often does the team travel to play in tournaments?

A. We allow the coaches to determine when and where their teams go to play in tournaments. We do recommend that the coaches not play in tournaments during the weekdays. Most developmenta teams play in the greater Atlanta area. Usually two tournaments a month. We are lucky in Atlanta there is a tournament every weekend. Top teams do travel to out of state tournaments a few times each year.

Q. Can a Georgia Pistols AAU participant compete in another sport during the AAU season?

A. Yes, but please make sure your AAU coach and the coach of your other sport(s) you may be participating in are aware that you are playing multiple sports simultaneously and that they do not have a problem with you doing so. School sports and our program usually work out to play both. While we do not mind our athletes to participate in other sports during the AAU season, we do expect our team to usually be given a priority (unless we have agreed to contrary in advance) in those instances where a conflict may arise. (An exception to that rule is when a school sport is involved and then we understand that activity must take priority.) Absenteeism causes problems with team harmony, performance, and overall chemistry on the court. AAU caliber basketball requires commitment from players, coaches, and parents. Coaches will do everything that they can to schedule tournaments when other sports do not interfere, however, State and National tournaments are scheduled by the AAU and we have no flexibility on them. Please make every effort to make sure your child is available for these weekends. Your coach will let you know the dates as soon as he can.

Q. How long are tournaments and how much can we expect to pay for admission at the tournaments?

A. Generally, tournaments run from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, with each team usually playing between 3-5 games, per tournament. Entry fees are approximately $5.00, per day, for adults and $3.00, per day, for children. Sometimes passes are available for the weekend at a discounted rate.

Is there fundraising to support teams?

Yes, the Pistols encourage teams to actively raise funds to support its teams if they travel. The organization is non-profit and has a Foundation, which is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Fund-raising can come in many forms, from the soliciting of corporate sponsorships to carwashes to candy sales to support from family and friends to “bucket brigades.” The Pistols have an annual Raffle for a flat screen TV and a computer game and the proceeds go to the team and not the club.

How are Pistols teams operated?

The Pistols organization serves almost as an “umbrella” to support our teams. Each team operates a unit within the structure of the organization – meaning each team is its own organization within the organization. The head coach is the leader of each team and is assisted in operating the team by assistant coaches, team manager, team mom, and for teams traveling a fund-raising coordinator. Usually interested parents of players on the team fill these auxiliary positions to assist the coach, players and team.

Who are Pistols coaches?

In the older age groups, Pistols head coaches and assistant coaches are affiliated with many of the top girls’ high school programs in the area and usually have a strong basketball background. Over the years, coaches have been affiliated with public and private. In the younger age groups, coaches may be dads or moms with coaching experience.

How are players split into teams?

Age level coaches and others evaluate each player and recommend her for a level they believe will suit her level of skill and aggressiveness. Coachesthen meet to draw up final lists for the age groups. Not all players who try out are offered spots on a team. However, we are very much a club that includes many developmental players. We sometimes will have up to 7 teams at an age.

Where and When are Try Outs or Evaluations held?

2010 Tryouts and Evaluations are being held various locations around the metro-Atlanta area. Please check the home page of the club website for more information ( www.gapistols.com ).
